What is IPO GMP?

GMP stands for Grey Market Premium. A Grey Market is an unofficial market where stocks start trading once the IPO (initial public offering) and its details like price band, issue size, etc. are announced. Grey Market Premium (GMP) is the extra premium on which the stock is trading in the grey market.

For Example, A stock named “ABCD” IPO is announced with a price band of Rs. 100 to Rs. 105. If the stock GMP (grey market premium) is Rs. 20, it means the stock price is trading at Rs. 20 GMP.

What is Grey Market?

A Grey Market is an unofficial market where IPO stocks are traded before being listed on exchanges like NSE and BSE. As it is an unofficial market, there is no control of the government or any government platform.

In the grey market, the trades happen through any unofficial broker or dealer. Trading in the grey market is highly risky as there is no regulator and in case the dealer is fraud.

What should you check before Applying for an IPO?

Making huge money from IPO in the short term is a good method but it comes with huge risk. Many IPO stocks were given more than 50% to 100% in a few days of listing in the NSE and BSE but on the other side, some IPOs crashed badly in just a few days.

You can avoid risky IPO by investing some time in the analysis of the company and the industry/sector. Here are some key points, you should check before applying for an IPO-

  • Risks
  • Strength
  • Financials
  • Valuations
  • Competitors
  • Fundamentals
  • Industry Outlook
  • Subscription Status
  • Company Competitors
  • Brokerages or Experts View
  • Industry & Market Conditions
  • etc…

Final Words

Grey Market Premium (GMP) is one of the good things to check the demand for IPO and predict the estimated listing price of any IPO. But one should not completely reply to it as many times the GPM of the IPO was high but just before the listing day it crashed. In many cases, the GMP was high but the IPO was listed at a discounted price.
